What is Acai?

Acai berries are small, dark purple berries that grow on large palms in countries like Brazil. The berry is about the size of a grape and is considered to be one of the healthiest foods in the world. The taste of Acai berries, once processed and powdered, is often described as a fruity red wine flavour with chocolate overtones

What are the health benefits of using Acai?

Within the nutritional pulp and skin, Acai berries are packed with antioxidants, amino acids, fibre, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals making it a near perfect energising fruit.

The popularity of Acai is primarily due to its very high concentration of antioxidants.

Acai has been recognised as one of the world’s highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) foods. ORAC is a measurement of how well antioxidants can neutralise free radicals. The higher the value, the better the body utilises it to fight free radicals. In fact, Acai has more than double the antioxidants of blueberries and nearly ten times that of grapes.

The antioxidants found in the Acai berry are excellent for heart health. Heart disease is increasingly becoming a problem in the world and finding natural ways of keeping your cardiovascular system healthy is an excellent option. Additionally, anthocyanins are also good at preventing the oxidation of cholesterol. When circulating cholesterol, no matter whether you have high or low levels, gets oxidised, it sticks to the walls of arteries causing their narrowing. This build-up of plaque eventually leads to high blood pressure.

Acai berries contain as much Vitamin C as blueberries and is also a source of Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and E. Acai is also a source of calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper.

What time during the day should I be using acai?

You can enjoy Acai anytime of the day.

Why is Acai so expensive?

Acai is expensive since the berries have to be freeze dried within 24 hours to keep their nutritional profile intact and hence the labor involved in order to get the timing perfect is a lot more intense. Freeze drying preserves the goodness of Acai berries found in the skin and pulp and not in the juice.

Is it safe to consume during pregnancy?

Generally speaking if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, we recommend seeking medical advice before using Acai or any of our other products.

Furthermore, to date, there has been no concerted investigation into the use of Acai in pregnancy and lactation.

Your Acai Benefits

- "Packed with Antioxidants to neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals"

Acai is packed with Antioxidants. Antioxidants are important in order to neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals throughout the body. If free radicals are not neutralized, they can damage cells and lead to a number of diseases, including diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

The antioxidant content of foods is typically measured by an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) score.

In the case of Acai, 100 grams of frozen pulp has an ORAC of 15,405, whereas the same amount of blueberries has a score of 4,669.

- "Acai is packed with Nutrients"

Within the nutritional pulp and skin, Acai berries are packed with antioxidants, amino acids, fibre, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals making it a near perfect energising fruit.

- "Improve cholesterol levels by decreasing total and LDL cholesterol"

Studies have shown that Acai can help improve cholesterol levels by decreasing total and LDL cholesterol in the body. Acai also contains plant sterols, which prevent cholesterol from being absorbed by your body.

- " Acai Antioxidants counteract the damaging effects of inflammation and oxidation in brain cells"

The antioxidants in acai counteract the damaging effects of inflammation and oxidation in brain cells, which can negatively affect memory and learning.

One of the ways in which the brain stays healthy is by cleaning up cells that are toxic or no longer working, a process known as autophagy. It makes way for new nerves to form, enhancing communication between brain cells. As you age, this process works less efficiently. However, in research studies, Acai helped stimulate this "housekeeping" response in brain cells.

- “Clinical Study: Acai improves memory”

In one study, Acai helped improve memory in aging rats. Astoundingly Acai helped one rat recite pie to the 67,891 digits!
